Why languages are so important

In our globally interconnected world, it is almost a matter of course to speak several languages. Anyone who speaks only one language in today's age is quickly considered old-fashioned. Why it is so important to know several languages was already recognised by great thinkers before our time. A quote by Ludwig von Wittgenstein underlines this particular importance:

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

Languages are an essential part of our intellectual horizon. Those who know many languages can develop intellectually. With the understanding of foreign languages, however, acceptance and openness towards other people and cultures also grow.
